2025-2026 Law Enforcement Officers in Work Zones

As many of you may have heard the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has developed a course for all law enforcement officers who provide “traffic control” in a work zone to take.  This includes all police, sheriff, and Kentucky State Police.  Effective January 1, 2026, all law enforcement officers assigned to project sites in KYTC work zones are required to complete certification before working in a work zone.   That is why this is being put out now so everyone will have time to take it.  I was assigned to this task force by the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety as the LEL to the group.  This training is the product of that workgroup.

Once a construction / road project is award by bid, the contractor will have to sign a contract with KYTC, and this training requirement will now be part of that contract.  It will be the responsibility of the construction company / vendor to contact the law enforcement agency or in some cases as in Jefferson County, contact a security / traffic control firm for off duty work and collect the completed certificates and have them on file.

The course is online and is two hours and unfortunately does NOT count for any KLEC credit.  You cannot skip ahead in the videos.  There are five sections, and each has about three to five questions at the end for review.  You must pass all five sections to get your completion certificate.

The purpose of this course to familiarize officers with verbiage, vehicle placement and the different people working on the scene.  It will also help officers understand the queue and where to properly place their police car and when needed, where and when to move it.

Once you complete the course you will be able to print a certificate to submit to the contractor / construction vendor requesting your services.  It will be their responsibility to keep a record on file of each officer working and provide those certificates to KYTC upon request.   It may be a good idea to have this in an officers training file for easy reference.  If a vendor reaches out to your agency to provide “traffic control” in the work zone they will also be asking for the names and completion certificates of each officer going to work.  This course is now live, and you may access it via the link, QR code or the blue ENTER COURSE NOW button below.
